We had a day off yesterday and it was fun just hanging with the OCC staff. I laughed harder than I have laughed in long time with them. The OCC staff are some great people who love the Lord, their job, and the people they serve. I want to be more like them.
So here's the 2 highlights of today and one low light. I got sick. that's the low light. Something has been going around the staff and it hit me this morning and ran through me till this afternoon. I thought i was going to be able to go to the airport and help with the pickup but I only got as far as the GO base and asked them to leave me there and come pick me up on their way back through. I started feeling better and I went down to grab dinner with Pierre'. He's one of the SP staff here and a Haitian native. Very cool guy. I told you about him in one of my earlier blogs. Anyway, we sat down at this picnic table across form this kid to eat. He looked like he was about 22/23 years old. I asked him how long he'd been here and he said 8 months. I said "what were you doing before that?". He said he just graduated from college. A recruiter from SP was on campus and he and a friend signed up. His friend went to the Sudan and he came to Haiti. I asked if he came by himself and how long he was going to be here. He said yes he came by himself and would be another 16 months. Are you thinking what I'm thinking? Uh huh. This kid is going to be something for sure. Imagine graduating college and going straight into the mission field...TO HAITI! He's more of a man than me. I've only been here 7 days and I'm about ready to go home.
At dinner I met an older guy who served in Ecuador for 25 years and just got to Haiti 2 weeks ago. He'll be here for a long time. He's on staff now with SP. I told him I thought I had met him last year in Ecuador and asked him if he was there the night Mincaye visited. I said it like "Did you get to meet him too?". He sorta looked at me funny and said "I helped Steve retrieve the airplane from the jungle. I know Mincaye very well and Steve is a close friend". If you don't know these names go rent the movie "End of the Spear". I told him I wanted to eat dinner with him. I won't bore you with a really long blog but dinner was just me asking him to tell stories. The short version is that he and some friends mortgaged their houses to start a ministry that has seen 2 Million people come to Christ over these 25 years. Yes....I said 2 million people.
Here's what i want you to know. God has people all over the globe doing extraordinary things and it's going to take eternity for all of us to catch up when we meet in heaven. Are you doing extraordinary things for the Gospel of jesus Christ?
I'll be going to church at a local church here and then doing more shoe box distributions tomorrow afternoon. Pray for me and my stomach. :)
